Answer
Basic equipment for filmmaking is easy to get your hands on, depending how professional you want it to look.

Most people will tell you to start with some piece of equipment, however you can have all the equipment in the world and never make a single thing without a script.
Your script is the most important piece of equipment you have. It is your blueprint for what you are about to embark on.

Next is your Camera. You can go from a Canon XL series which will run you into the few thousand dollars, and give you an excellent image and quality. These types of cameras fall into the prosumer category and offer much more camera than what a you may need. However if you are experimenting with film you can goto your local Best Buy and pick up a camera that has a firewire connection on it for as little as three hundred dollars. Canon and Sony make some of the better ones and as for minidv versus digital8 there are advantages and disadvantages to both. Get what's in your budget.

You want your film to look somewhat decent, so I would suggest picking up a tripod. This piece of equipment will let you set up your camera without having to hold it and get the film jitters. Tripods help keep any movement controlled and fluid. Plus you can keep the legs folded up on the tripod and have a makeshift steadycam.

You have now shot your film and want to get it posted on you tube, so you need to transfer it over to your PC. This is where the firewire comes into play. Connect your camera to you PC via a firewire cable, you may need to go get a firewire card (IEEE 1394 port) for your computer, and a cable. Once you have connected the camera to the computer and it has been identified you are ready for the next step.

Transfer your film to your computer can be done via Windows movie maker and edited in the same application. However if you have the money I would suggest getting a copy of Adobe Premiere. This program lets you import the video and edit it, however it has a lot more features and power that windows movie maker doesn't offer.
