I don't exactly want to be a teacher, but by (eventually) being highly educated, how can I help to make a big difference in the world?
Answer
Change yourself before you change the world.
Education shapes our future as we pass down our knowledge and wisdom to the future generations. The world nowadays decides to focus more on academic and holistic development which is also based on merits and statistics(CCA points/reports) - not supposed to use these to motivate a student to do CCA/CIP etc.. I am greatly disappointed by the points and grade system today. It is necessary to assess a student based on grades and points, but too much focus on it distorts the original objective of a holistic education. That is why even though the world is progressing - all the new technologies, new knowledge, new gadgets - implicitly, the moral base of the society is corroding. SO much of the database and statistics and digits drowned the true value of humanity and the things we do. For example, the value of a service and the value of an educator cannot be placed on the same weighing scale with money and some statistics. So much of a media, protraying our fantasies and using them to entice us that we grew lazy to see beyond the beauty of explicity. Terrorism, discrimination, poverty, stigmatism, psychological disorders, stress etc. Even the economical problems are due to the blunders of education. Even the law. Even our teachers. Failed to see the needs of the students and the society. Knowledge/grades/achievements are nothing when the world has no wisdom. Because without the wisdom, they will not be able to appreciate the value of others, so further accomplishment are just a blind pursuit to fill their emptiness. Wisdom comes before knowledge and educators have to recognise that wisdom and personality cannot be measured by grades. Like the value of a product annot be measured by the price tag. Maybe it is time for the second aristotle to emerge.
So much of a psychological myopia.

Here is the catch: The world won't be changed by knowledge, it will only be changed by wisdom. Only wisdom can solve the roots of the societal problems like terrorism. Can we resolve terrorism by just excuting them? Can we provide justice by just hanging the alleged(Or does it just makes the audience feel relieved)? Does censorship remove the lust for violence and pornography in people?
Wisdom + knowledge + skills together will make it possible just like architects needs civil engineers, electronic engineers etc.
Because.....
A wise person can discern the core of important problems.
A wise person has self-knowledge.
A wise person seems sincere and direct with others.
A wise person's actions are consistent with his/her ethical beliefs. (wikipedia)
Only when we recognise the existence of the different worlds besides our own, appreciate them and not impose our world or be more wealthy and powerful by crushing others down. Things might not be the way we see they are. Educators are one of the most admirable occupations as they shape the future generations, but sadly many educators nowadays see them as just a job or business. Like I said, their value cannot be measured.
We are educated to discern black and white, but we realise that nothing in this world is absolute. (Ethical dilemmas etc.)
Back to the question. how do you educate?
- Change yourself
- In the process, unconsciously change others
- Of course you can be a teacher
- Or You can write a book
- But most importantly, take o a job that you really liked and influence the people there. Don't be discourage that you only influence only a handful. As for them, it is their whole world.
And don't forget the snowball effect.
Wise education should be the cure for terrorism and other implicit problems in the sociey.
And don't misunderstand that the education system is a failure. It is good nowadays it is just that it lacks wisdom.
But beyond that, there are really quite a number of wise people and beautiful things out there in this hectic world. Just close your eyes and look. With your mind's eye.
