Safety gadgets for toddlers?

Cindy D

I am the mother of a budding engineer. Robby is 18 months old and into everything, much more than big sister was! He's also much bigger and more mobile, so he can reach things at a younger age, and we have a cat now, which we didn't have the first time around.

Question 1: Are toilet locks worthwhile? How much of a pain are they to install and use? The bathroom door doesn't close well, so the only way to keep him out is to put up a baby gate, which is inconvenient for the rest of us!

Question 2: We have a covered cat litter box, but he has learned to work the latches! Any ideas? Due to the floor plan of our house, there is absolutely NO other place to put the litter box. It has to be opened daily for scooping.

How best to keep Robby out of these highly desirable "toys?"
For Dr. Jeannie, I'm not trying to get out of my parenting duties, I'm trying to get something DONE around here before someone sees the condition of my house and calls child welfare! In the meantime, the toilet is DANGEROUS. I literally can't turn my back for more than 30 seconds, and it's really hard to clean that way. I'm all in favor of teaching children what's OK and what's not OK, but I need to keep him safe while he's learning. I have safety covers on the stove controls, too, and a safety latch on the oven, because they are both reachable.

I think maybe the latch on the outside of the bathroom door is probably best. And I'm definitely going to check out the litter box. The fact is, there is no place I can put the litter box where the cat has access and the baby doesn't!

Thanks to everyone!

One more thing--I can't use the dishwasher lock because when it's locked and you turn the knob (which Robby can do), it starts running! Any ideas for that?

Answer
Q 1 - Our bathroom doors close fine, so we just keep them closed. I have never used the toilet latch or seen anyone who used one. However, one woman I know bought a simple latch and eyehook from Wal-mart and attached it to her pantry door near the top, and that worked to keep her kids out of the snacks. That might be cheaper and less of a pain than the toilet lock.

Q 2 - We used to have a cat too, and we had the same problem (plus the dog thought the cat stuff was food. Gross). We bought the Clevercat top entry litter box from Petsmart. Here is the link to the info page about it, or if you'd rather, just go to petsmart.com and click on cats, then litter boxes, and it's on the second page.
http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2754439
Anyway, it's like a big box with a hole on top, and if you have it between the wall and something else, it may be a little more of a pain for Robby to mess with. The top comes off, but it kind of snaps on, like one of those big rubbermaid containers, so it's a little harder for little ones to get into. Plus it doesn't have the cool swinging door on it. :) That's what my son liked. Check it out at least, it might help you. Or, you could always do what my best friend did - give away the cats. ;) Just kidding.

If neither of those things are helpful, you will probably just have to keep removing him from those two dangers consistently until he learns that they are not to play with. Consistent consequences are probably key here, for instance, time outs or a pop on the hand if you believe in that, or whatever you decide, and they just stick with the consequences until he gets out of this phase. Maybe. LOL I'm in the same boat, my son wasn't nearly as much trouble as my daughter is, LOL. She's only 13 mo and can already climb into and out of the bathtub, and does so regularly. I find her sitting the there, waiting for me to fill it up so she can play. Sigh. She also delights in pulling everything out of the dishwasher. I'm like, are you kidding? Who would have thought of that? LOL

Good luck with your babies!

Anybody remember this kid's gadget?

I saw some pictures of Boy Meets World and remembered I used to have this gadget that let you watch tv shows that you bought on small discs. It was made for kids. It's not a portable DVD player because it only played the special discs that you bought separately. I just wana look it up for nostalgic purposes. It came out in the early 2000s. Possibly around 2002-2003. I also had Spongebob episodes too. Thanks!

Are the kids in Japan spoiled?

Dyana

What kind of cars do kids in Japan drive? and what age do they get their first car? I heard that alot of them spend alot of money on designer clothes and gadgets....

Answer
It depends on a family. All Japanese people are not rich. But that doesn't mean that they can't send their kids to, for example, America to have them study in a four year college because the tuition in America is not that bad. Usually people in the middle class can afford to send their kids to overseas.

Anyway, usually many kids in the middle class get a part time job when they are in a high school. But the reason why they get the job is that they want to buy something for themselves: designer brand wallets, designer brand handbags, latest gadets and so on. But the high school that I went to didn't allow students to get a part-time job so I couldn't work. So when I needed money to buy something, I just asked my mom to give me some money.

And normally, Japanese kids can't drive their car until they turn 18 years old because of the law. But of course some rich kids get their first car before they turn 18. My friend's brother got his first car when he was 17 years old. And it was a brand new Mercedes Benz. But my friend's parents are rich so I don't want you to think that all Japanese kids get that kind of car as their first car. Well, usually lots of Japanese kids take a bus and train and/or ride a bicycle. That's the typical transportation for many Japanese kids and actually adult people, too.

But because they don't own a car, they have money to buy designer brand stuff. It's not uncommon to see Japanese people who take a bus and train and ride a bicycle carry designer brand stuff.

And usually many Japanese people get their first car after they turn 18 or 20 years old or after they are obviously permitted lawfully to get their driver's license. Well, I actually don't have a driver's license in Japan because it's very expensive to get a driver's licence there. But since I'll live in the states for the rest of my life( or maybe I'm going to live in a different country??? I don't know...), I don't really need a driver's licence there but here in the states where I could get my driver's licence for $20 dollars( well..I got my driver's license more than 10 years ago...). Anyway, my brother took his driver's license before he graduated from a four year college in Tokyo and it cost him about $3000 dollars. So getting a driver's licence is not cheap in Japan. That's why, some people who can't afford to get a driver's licence don't have a car but take a bus and train and/or ride a bicycle. And typical Japanese college students from the middle class don't own a car but a bicycle or moped.

And two of the most popluar cars among young adults these days in Japan are Toyota Corolla and Honda Fit. But I want you to know that a typical middle class family owns only one or two cars since they usually don't have a house with a huge parking space ( well, if one household has more than one car or two cars, that means their adult kids still live with them or they usually have a job that needs tracks and/or vans or they live in a country side where more parking space is available for cheaper prices or they are farmers).

Anyway, my answer for your question is that typical Japanese kids from the middle class are not spoiled but rich kids are usually spoiled.

Did it work? My son is having his 3rd birthday and I just realized he has every toy and gadget a kid could possibly want or need and he totally destroys everything. Throwing things, unloading his whole room onto the floor then walking away just because he feels like it, he breaks something then he cries he wants a new one (and I say Heck no! You Shouldn't have broke it) but he's getting so spoiled! Is he too young for me to make him take all his things to goodwill and leave him with a book and 2 toys? Can he even grasp that concept this young?

Answer
He's to young to learn any lessons.
He seems to be bored and over stimulated from too many toys

When he is not around, take a garbage bag and throw out any broken or dangerous toys.

Next get a box and pick out toys to give away or donate. Choose toys that are too baby ish or the ones you know he will never play with, or the ones he has doubles of triples of. If there are new toys you know he will not care for, give those away too. Purge your stuffed animals. Toy cars tend to plié up too.

Now, you should be left with the stuff you want to keep and the stuff you know he likes.

Now divide the stuff into:

music toys
Building block/construction
Cars and trucks
Dolls and action figures
Board games
Books
Toy tools
Balls
etc etc.

Now divide each category into three piles
eg
music toys: pile 1, pile two and pile 3.
Building block/construction: pile 1, pile two and pile 3.

Now take all pile 1s and put in a large container.
Take all pile 2's and put in a large container. put into storage.

Keep pile 3 in his room. This way he has less toys, but has a wide variety of different types of toys..

Get shelves and bins and baskets and label them using the above categories and put the pile 3 toys in his room.

In 3 moths, you can put pile 3 away and pull out the pile 2s.
Of course don't pack away a toy you know he really likes and similarly, get rid of any toy you know he is fed up of.

This way if he breaks a toy, he's stuck with broken toys for a while and might be inclined to treat them better. Also get a large clear bin, but it high in the kitchen where he can see it, and tell him any toys not treated or packed away and the entire category ( eg all cars) will be taken away for a week.

What do I need to know about Nintendo DS?

halts4

My kids have decided to ask Santa for Nintendo DS for Christmas. They are 9 & 11. Will this be an appropriate gadget for kids this age or will they quickly outgrow it? What do I need to look for when shopping for them?
Also, what colors do they come in?
Also, do you also need the starter kit, or does it come with everything you need already? Thanks!

Answer
You want to get the Lite rather than the original DS. It will be fine for them at these ages and they won't outgrow them for a long time. Besides, you can keep getting different games as they get older. I know there are some adults that still use them all the time.

What advice would you give to a new mum about raising kids that you wish someone had told you? My babys due on Christmas Day!

Answer
1. You won't need half the crap that you bring to the hospital with you. And it will be a pain in the butt to carry it all home.
2. There are tons of stupid baby gadgets out there. Don't get suckered into things like baby wipes warmers, knee-pads for crawlers, etc.
3. It will be much harder than you ever expected, and so much more rewarding than you ever expected.
4. Let your partner help. Insist that your partner helps.
5. Even with a newborn, you need time alone. Give the baby to your partner, a grandparent, anything, and get out of the house for an hour, ALONE! Get a pedicure, buy a book, or just go grocery shopping by yourself, at least once a month.

How do you feel about letting small children use your expensive gadgets?

Grammar Nu

I don't like hardly anyone, especially kids, using my electronics (my 3DS, for example) -- they're not allowed to, in fact.

Why? It's because their hands are sticky/dirty and they are often not gentle.

I take good care of my things and simply cannot trust others to be careful.

It seems that it's seen as offensive if I ask others to be gentle, as if I'm assuming that they will not be.

Am I in the wrong here?

I ask because of a little debate that I had with my mom and step-dad earlier about letting a 2-year-old play on an iPad -- with supervision, of course.

Answer
I have kids and I didn't have a problem letting my children play with my expensive "gadgets". I knew that they'd be gentle and careful. I am more reluctant with other people's kids.

You are completely within your rights to refuse other people's children or your own children to play with your electronics. These are YOUR items, not public property. Even if you are overprotective of your items, it does not change a thing. If a child does accidentally break the item, most parents will offer to replace it BUT...but they will expect you to turn down their offer and get offended and/or angry if you don't-especially if it's a family member.

For a holiday program my church is organising, the theme is detectives. The age group is prep (age 5) to 12 year olds. For every day, a 'detective' will be comming to talk to the kids (an adult dressed up) For the 5 day week, we will need 5 different detectives that primary school age kids would know. We have already thought of Nancy Drew and Sherlock Holmes. Can u think of some other ones. Thanks.

Answer
The Hardy boys, Dick Tracey, Scooby doo, Inspector Gadget, Detective Conan.
