Does your teenager have smartphone?

My 13 son told me that 7 in 10 kids at his school has smartphone or some kind of i- gadget and using it to watch videos during recess. I can't believe it. I was thinking more like 2 in 10. (not talking about those very basic i-Pod and very basic phone). What do you think? He's a new 8th grader. Is a smartphone necessity for a teenager?
I would like answers from parents only, not from teens, thanks.
I'm especially interested in knowing the number - 7 out of 10 or 2 out of 10?

Also to be sure my son has a basic phone but not a smartphone. Don't count basic phone!

Honestly a smartphone is not a nessecity for anyone. Let alone a teenager.

why does people mostly teenagers are so obsessed with new things especially gadgets? ?

People now a days are so obsessed with new things especially gadgets and other products of technology, most of them are teenagers.. Even though they already have cellphones, laptops, and etc.. They still want to have the latest version of it.. Why do you think they do this? Is it important?

because in our day and age, the kids want everything...the newest and the best..i personally make my daughter buy from goodwill...thats just me...i mean how cool are they to go to school with the lastest gadget...everyone wants to see it or use it...it makes them more popular amoung their peers....
