I know that most airlines these days let you bring one carry-on bag and a personal item, which can be something like a laptop case. My question is regarding the personal item, which I'll carry with me rather than stowing above my head. It'll have an assortment of gadgets and things that I want to get to while I'm on the plane or in the airport. I'm wondering what size/type of bag works best for having with you that can go on the floor by your legs? In the past I've brought a photography bag that was roughly a 1-foot cube, but it was a bit awkward in terms of leg room. Is the size/shape of a laptop case the best way to go or is there something better? It seems like you could just put your legs over it and have it right up against your seat on the floor. Thanks for any good tips.

Answer
During flight, something that fits under your knees is indeed a good idea. But during takeoffs and landings, that personal item must be under the seat in front of you.
On my last two trips, my camera bag was my carry on. It's the backpack style, and it easily holds two bodies, 3 lenses, and a bunch of other accessories. If I leave one of the bodies home, that section of the pack is great for holding a few other small items. My iPad, passport, etc fit in an outer zippered pocket. http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Deluxe-Backpack-200EG-Cameras/dp/B00009R6TA
It fits under the seat, but I do bring it out and put it up against the seat under my knees during the flight to give me more room for my feet.

How can I not get my laptop stolen when I am on the subway?

Q. Ok so In a couple days I must take the subway home (in toronto, canada) from my aunts house. in my backpack, i will be carrying my laptop as i must bring it home. My journey will be around mid day so there should be tons of people around. do you think that i will attract attention with just a regular backpack and my ipod in my ears? what are the chances of me getting robbed?

Answer
Thieves don't like to attract attention to themselves.
It's better to lift a laptop unnoticed.
The way to avoid that is to keep laptop hidden in back pack; carry it on your lap with zippers facing toward your body & keep arms through the shoulder straps w/ arms crossed.
I'd not wear any head phones to draw attention to other electronic gadgets you possess.
Ride the subway looking like you are keeping constant awareness of your surroundings in a confident manner.

The thief is looking for distracted individuals who are not keeping an eye on their belongings.
They don't even have to know you have a lap top.
They will steal a back pack when your not looking & hope they find something valuable in it later.
