How do you not get lost when traveling alone?

Let's say I want to go to Australia or Egypt by myself. How do I not get lost? And if I do somehow get lost, what should I do?

I know some people backpack to foreign places, and they always make it back healthy and in one piece. How do they do it?

If you know how to ask the right people when asking directions and place, have researched first your destinations including the possible language barrier with the locals, have portable gadget that will come in handy for maps and directions, manual map and of course courage for your part.

I have a bunch of technology that I am would like to travel with. What are good bags to carry them in safely?

It can be either a backpack or a messenger bag, but I am looking for a good bag for my tech stuff. I have two tablets, a chromebook, a smartphone, and bunches of chargers and other accessories that I might want to take with me so any backpack that would fit thtat much stuff safely would be great.
