How do you make gadgets for your blog?

I want to make some gadgets, but I don't know how to! Does anyone know who can explain to me how to make gadgets. I'm most interested in making a quote of the day gadget with quotes I choose, but any ideas for making something else will help.

I currently have a few writers who want to write for my blog but it's a hassle for them to email me and for me to post it. Is there a blogger gadget or widget I can add so people can sign in as a guest and post themselves under my permission?
